Math
We are in the midst of Unit 1. This unit has a focus of developing routines and working with basic numeration. The five main areas of focus are:
Number patterns, sequences, number lines, and number grids
Review months, weeks, days, and telling time
Practice addition facts
Give equivalent names for numbers
Compare numbers
The children have been excited to practice facts with the xtramath website. Please continue to encourage the kids to practice facts at home. Also, there are so many opportunities for fact practice on the everyday math website with the games.
The Home Link workbook will be sent home for the kids to use. Please help the children to tear out pages and attach them to the homework packet as they are assigned. Some Home Links may not be assigned, and therefore will not be collected at school. Feel free to use them at home, but do not send them back.
If you have not sent in coins for your child to use in class, please do so next week. Also, we are making number scrolls and are in need of paper towel rolls. Thank you!

Writing Workshop
During Writing Workshop the children have been learning about autobiographies. We learned that autobiographies are a non-fiction story written by ourself. After brainstorming many topics that may be included in the autobiography, the children created several chapters with a table of contents.
Next week the kids will review friendly letters and the parts of a letter. They will learn the format of the friendly letter and that all letters are written for a purpose and to a specific audience.
Social Studies
Our first topic for Social Studies was community. The children really enjoyed technology integration through this topic. They generated a google earth image of their own home as well as a route to school. Additionally, the kids spent several days in the LMC doing a small research project on community helpers. It has been a busy September so far and we are doing great things.
In the Coming Weeks
We will start a few lessons of a science life cycle unit which is a year long theme. Then we will continue with Science and begin our unit on rocks.
